Arsenic uptake and accumulation in plants

نویسندگان

چکیده

Arsenic uptake by plants is species-specific and its level in terrestrial of uncontaminated sites ranged from 0.009 to 1.5 mg/kg. Plants with high metal or metalloid capability their biomass are called hyperaccumulators. The most efficient arsenic (As) hyperaccumulator belongs Pteridaceae species Pteris vittata L. Pityrogramma calomelanos L., both can accumulate more than 8000 mg/kg As above-ground parts. Higher concentrations interfere various metabolic activities manifest through several morphological impairments. A higher concentration accelerates the production free radicals reactive oxygen (ROS) within cell. have a scavenging system regulate ROS; also known as antioxidant defence system. mechanism consists an enzymatic non-enzymatic Non-enzymatic includes carotenoids, ascorbic acid, glutathione whereas comprises superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, guaiacol reductase.

Arsenic uptake and metabolism in plants.

Arsenic (As) is an element that is nonessential for and toxic to plants. Arsenic contamination in the environment occurs in many regions, and, depending on environmental factors, its accumulation in food crops may pose a health risk to humans.Recent progress in understanding the mechanisms of As uptake and metabolism in plants is reviewed here. Arsenate is taken up by phosphate transporters. A ...

How Plants Control Arsenic Accumulation

In many parts of the world, groundwater contains so much arsenic that it builds up in irrigated crops. Linked to cancer and heart disease, this toxic element is particularly worrisome in rice, which absorbs arsenic more readily than other grains and is a staple for billions of people. Countries with the double whammy of arsenic-laced groundwater and heavy rice consumption include Bangladesh, In...

Silicon uptake and accumulation in higher plants.

Silicon (Si) accumulation differs greatly between plant species because of differences in Si uptake by the roots. Recently, a gene encoding a Si uptake transporter in rice, a typical Si-accumulating plant, was isolated. The beneficial effects of Si are mainly associated with its high deposition in plant tissues, enhancing their strength and rigidity. However, Si might play an active role in enh...

Uptake kinetics of arsenic species in rice plants.

Arsenic (As) finds its way into soils used for rice (Oryza sativa) cultivation through polluted irrigation water, and through historic contamination with As-based pesticides. As is known to be present as a number of chemical species in such soils, so we wished to investigate how these species were accumulated by rice. As species found in soil solution from a greenhouse experiment where rice was...

Metal Tolerance, Accumulation, and Detoxification in Plants with Emphasis on Arsenic in Terrestrial Plants

A number of review articles have appeared in the literature recently on metal accumulation by plants. However, reports on the tolerance, accumulation and detoxification of arsenic in plants, especially in terrestrial plants, are limited. In light of the strong needs for study of arsenic biogeochemistry and development of arsenic decontamination techniques, in this paper we. review arsenic uptak...
